DID YOU KNOW?
Russia declared state of emergency as on 3 june, after a massive oil spill in the Arctic region. As 20,000 tones of fuel leaked from a power plant in norilsk leaked into a river. The clean up of this over may took 10 years or more.
The norilsk diesel oil spill is an ongoing disaster near norilsk, krasnoyarsk, russia.
SIDE EFFECTS
Oil spills are harmful to marine birds, and mammals as well as fish and shellfish. Oil destroys the insulating ability of fur bearing mammals. Thus, this leads to exposing these creatures to the harsh elements.
The principal reason that led to the 20,000 ton oil leaked at an Arctic region power plant in Russia that is now being recognised is the sinking of ground surface due to permafrost thaw.
The thermoelectric plant at Norilsk, 3,000 km northeast of Moscow, is built entirely on permafrost, whose weakening over the years due to climate change caused the pillars supporting a fuel tank at the plant to sink.
